GUWAHATI: A fast track court in Guwahati is being converted to a special court to expedite the trial of the case related to October 30, 2008 serial blasts. Trial of the case has been progressing very slowly.
The serial blasts allegedly carried out by the banned, National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Ranjan Daimary faction) had killed 88 innocent persons and grievously injured 141. Most of the people were killed in three blast sites in Guwahati city while blasts also occurred in Kokrajhar town and Bongaigaon.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday approved the recommendation of Gauhati High Court to temporarily convert one Additional District and Sessions Judge, Fast Track court into a Special Court for trying Sessions Case No. 59(K) that pertains to the serial bomb blasts.
At first, the investigation was carried out by Assam Police and later on, it was handed over to CBI which submitted charge sheet against 19 persons in 2011. There are altogether 829 witnesses in the case out of which only 78 witnesses have been examined.
In order to expedite the disposal of this case, the Gauhati High Court recommended setting up a special court for exclusively trying the case.
The leader of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland, Ranjan Daimary is now in jail. He was apprehended in Bangladesh and was handed over to Assam police. He is named as one of the key accused by the CBI in the case.
