GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday warned contractors and officials of jail terms if they were found to be responsible for substandard work while implementing any government schemes including those in infrastructure sector.

“The state government would not tolerate any negligence regarding maintenance of proper standard of construction of roads and embankments. If the construction works are found to be below standard than the responsible engineers and contractors would be sent to jail,” Sonowal declared in a review meeting with the district heads of all government departments held at Deputy Commissioner’s conference hall at Garmur, in Majuli river island district of Assam.

The chief minister issued a strict order to engineers, contractors and officers of different departments to maintain the highest standard in implementation of all government schemes and programmes. Reviewing the functioning of Brahmaputra Board, Water Resource Department, Public Works Department etc., in the district, Sonowal said that funds allotted for construction of roads and embankments and for rural development works must not be misused. No officer, engineer and contractor would be spared if found neglecting their duty, he warned.

The chief minister also took stock of the new projects and schemes to be implemented by Brahmaputra Board and Water Resource Department in Majuli. Brahmaputra Board will complete insertion of geo bags at the 23 kms length of the embankment from Tekelifuta to Samaguri for a total cost of Rs 198.99 crore in the first part of December, the chief minister was apprised. On the other hand, the Water Resource Department has prepared a plan for protecting Majuli from flood and erosion of Suwanasiri and Luit-Khabalu rivers for a total cost of Rs 70 crores, the chief minister was informed.

Sonowal also reviewed the implementation of schemes under P&RD Department like Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna, MGNREGA etc., along with other important schemes like Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojna.

During the meeting, the chief minister also directed the two Block Development Officers of Majuli and the officers of P&RD Department to complete the construction works of all the houses allotted under Pradahan Mantri Awas Yojna by 31st March 2018. He also directed the Power Department to ensure hundred percent electrification of Majuli at an early date.
