SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma while justifying the Cherry Blossom Festival said at least the visitors are seeing budding cherry if not the flowers.
“The whole mantra is that the visitors are coming and seeing the budding cherry. They would come again when it blooms,” Sangma told reporters on Thursday.
The chief minister said he had seen quite a number of cherry blossom trees budding though not at Ward’s Lake.
To a question, the chief minister said, “Cherry blossom trees are playing their trick. We fixed the event in advance though it was expected for cherry blossoms in this party of the world to bloom. However, the event will only encourage the visitors to revisit the state and we will gain from this,” he said.
According to the chief minister, the government wanted to tell the world that in Meghalaya cherry blossom blooms at a time and during a season when there are no cherry blossoms in other parts of the world.
