SHILLONG: The Federation of NEEPCO Employees’ Union observed its first raising day on Sunday at its headquarters in the city.
The union was formed on November 12, 2016, with an aim to address the issues of workers and employees and also to ensure greater transparency in the corporation.
A large number of members attended the raising day programme despite being a Sunday.
Prof Manabendra Bhattacherjee, President of Meghalaya Joint Council of Trade Union and Association, attended the function as chief guest on the occasion.
Bhattacharjee spoke on the issues of disinvestment and problems of the working class in the country. He told the gathering how the government is systemically working against the interest of the labour class and provided example of private sector companies like Reliance Telecom (Mobile).
“The company did not even bother to inform the valued customers regarding its closure and due to this, the employees working in the company are the worst sufferers,” Bhattacharjee said.
“The employees are deprived of their rights and are unable to raise their voice against the private companies because formation of trade union is not allowed,” he said, adding that this is how the government systematically destroys trade unionism in the country and ignore the basic rights of employees.
