SHILLONG: Six members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) were detained on Wednesday afternoon after they defaced signboards at Sohra post office.
Police said the KSU members were irked because the name of the place on the post office signboards were changed to Cherrapunjee from Sohra.
The activists — Shemphrang Synrem (28), Vicky Mawnai (26), Mesadap B Skhankill (19), Meban Raphang Nongrum (20), NambhaKupar Syiemlieh (19) and Patrick L Nongriat (19) — entered the post office and sprayed black colour on the notice board and signboards bearing the name ‘Cherrapunjee’, said Sohra SDPO Ian Swer.
The SDPO said the KSU members also sprayed on the walls of resorts and shops in Sohra area.
A written complaint has been received from the post master and a case has been registered.
Sohra police also inquired from SDO (Civil) Sohra if there was any order about renaming the signboards from Cherrapunjee to Sohra but it was informed that the matter was being looked into.
