SHILLONG: National People’s Party (NPP) state president, WR Kharlukhi said that the party would come up with surprises in the days to come in the run up to the state elections 2018.

Stating that the party is aiming big, he told reporters on Wednesday at the party office, “There will be bigger and bigger surprises.”

Asked whether the party will rope in sitting legislators, he said, “I think so (laughs). Not only leaders, legislators.”

“But more or less it is confirmed that they will contest from the party,” he said, adding that the names of sitting legislators will probably come up in the fourth or final list

He stated that candidates in 6-7 constituencies in Garo Hills are fighting for party tickets which delay the decision making.

Asked on the announcement of third list of candidates, Kharlukhi said that the decision will be taken after the arrival of national president of NPP, Conrad Sangma.

On this day, the president welcomed P. Nongpluh who deserted the BJP camp and joined the NPP on Wednesday along with several of her supporters.

She aspires to contest the 2018 State Assembly elections from Pynthorbah constituency and address certain issues plaguing the constituency.

On strategy to elect candidates for the party, Kharlukhi said, “The party looks at the situation whether it is favorable or not.”

Stating that the plan of the party is not to set up candidates that will give Congress a chance, he said, “First and foremost, we strive to win. If we don’t win, at least, Congress should lose.”

As for allotting tickets to party aspirants, he said that the party will discuss the matter as he stressed that the party has its own strategy to fight elections.
