JOWAI: A village under Nartiang constituency in West Jaintia Hills has a record of 200 dual voters.
It is reported that residents of Rtiang Sanphaw village, bordering Karbi-Anglong in Assam, cast their votes in both the states.
Rtiang Sanphaw, a village under Saitsama polling station, is inhabited by different tribes like Pnars and Karbis whereas Saitsama has a large number of Hmar or Hadem tribes. The Jaintia Hills Hynniewtrep National People’s Front (HNPF) president, K Lone Laloo, said they would lodge a complaint with the Chief Election Officer.
“The dual voting is not only illegal but it will also affect the boundary of the state as Assam may encroach on the village and claim it with a proof of the voters,” the HNPF president said.
The organisation has also urged the Meghalaya Election Commission to deal with the issue to conduct the Assembly election legitimately.
Chief Election Officer FR Kharkongor told that he would direct the concerned deputy commissioner to verify and take necessary action as per the guidelines of the Election Commission of India.
Kharkongor had said on Tuesday the election department is in touch with Assam’s chief electoral officer for comparing the electoral rolls of the two states for deletion of dual voters.
