TURA: The United Democratic Party (UDP), State Youth Wing has written to the Director General of Police (DGP) in Shillong urging him to look into the allegations of illegal collection of money from small time shopkeepers of Tura market by certain associations.
The complaint came after non-tribals belonging to the business community raised the issue during an interaction programme with party president, Dr Donkupar Roy at Rikman Continental Hotel in the heart of Tura market recently.
In its complaint to the DGP, Joint Secretary of the State Youth Wing, Anand R Marak said that the major reason behind the abnormal difference of prices of commodities like fish, bidis, vegetables, eggs etc was due to the illegal collection by such groups who had the backing of certain political leaders.
Marak claimed that there were a number of organisations registered under ‘Registrar of Societies’ which are not serving the purpose but are created with the sole aim of collecting money.
“Innocent counter operators fearing their wrath are being forced to comply with their demands. This in turn has resulted in rise in prices of commodities as the small time traders have to make up for their losses due to the illegal collections,” Marak added. The Youth Wing also raised the issue of pathetic conditions of roads in South Garo Hills and urged the official to look into the matter.
