SHILLONG: The villages of Laitlum, Laitkseh, Wahlakhiat in East Khasi Hills and Dawki in West Jaintia Hills are facing a common problem – they are yet to see the “light” of electricity for months now, thanks to a damaged transformer.
Sordar of Laitlum, Philip Mylliem and the Sordar of Wahlakhiat, Lom Suting informed that Laitlum and Wahlakhiat has had no electricity since June, while the Sordar of Laitkseh, D. Kurkalang rued that the village had to cope without power for the past two months.
They sought the help of local MDC from Mawkynrew, Banteidor Lyngdoh who met the chairman and managing director of MeECL, PS Thangkhiew over the matter.
“I have been informed that there is fund constraint which makes it unfeasible to replace the damaged transformer immediately,” Lyngdoh said,
In this connection, the CMD assured him that the matter would be taken up.
The negative news has turned up to be a sour fruit for the traditional heads as they have time and again approached the office to get the transformer replaced.
Meanwhile, the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) also submitted a petition to the office of the CMD as the transformer in Lower Bakur, near Dawki has been in a damaged state, leaving the village in darkness for two months.
Nikson Lamin, the president of HNYF said, “We are giving 15 days’ deadline to the MeECL to change the transformer.”
According to the organisation, business is being hit because of the situation as people running photocopy and computer typing shops, steel fabrication units among others have to use electricity.
