SHILLONG: Altogether five independent MLAs in the state have expressed their willingness to contest the upcoming Assembly polls as Congress candidates

Informing this here on Thursday, Chief Minister, Mukul Sangma said some independent MLAs had expressed their desired to be Congress nominee in the polls and it is under examination.

Sangma informed that four sitting MLAs from Garo Hills and one independent MLA from Khasi Hills had wanted to contest the election on a Congress ticket   and their names would have to be approved by the Central Election Committee of the party.

According to Sangma, in Jaintia Hills, there were some people, not MLAs, who had shown their interest to join the party.

When asked about the withdrawal of some independent MLAs form the MUA II Government, Sangma said that   they had withdrawn as battle lines for the elections had been drawn

He also said that some independent MLAs had withdrawn   from the Government since Party already had well nurtured potential nominees from their constituencies.

Sangma also slammed the independent MLAs for criticising the Government   saying   it was not a new trend as it was a way for them to reach out to people and tell them they were better than others.

“Non-performers are blaming others who have performed,” Sangma said even as he added that people who had not achieved anything blamed the Government and others and it was seen earlier that people who blamed Government and other for not being able to achieve anything were being shown door by the electorates.

He also said that there was no scope for non-performance of any respective MLAs.

Meanwhile, Sangma also downplayed the reported move by the Opposition parties to move a no-confidence motion against the Government in the upcoming winter session saying    the Opposition earlier too had tried to topple the Government on many occasion by   moving different no-confidence motions.

“They have plenty of time to engage in these kind of activities and we know how to deal with these activities,” Sangma said.
