SHILLONG: A two- day craft bazaar was organised by NIFT Shillong December 2017 in its campus at Lawmali, Shillong. The event has provided a platform to the artisans for exhibiting their creations of handicraft and handloom products and to interact with the budding designers and craft experts of NIFT in terms of design innovation and development of traditional crafts.
The exhibition was inaugurated by Sanjib Barchung, Director of Sericulture and Weaving Department, as the chief guest who spoke on the importance of the handloom and handicraft sector to the rural economy of the state and the country. He lauded NIFT Shillong for organising such an event which will help the weavers and artisans to get the exposure and marketing of their products and hoped that more such events will be held in the future on a bigger scale.
A large number of artisans and weavers from different parts of Meghalaya took part in the event and display a range of attractive products which caught the eye of many visitors with their unique and aesthetically design and craftsmanship. The closing ceremony was graced by N Palai, Regional Director, DC (H), Guwahati as the chief guest who also presented the certificates to all the artisans and weavers.
The Institute which is a premier fashion and design technology institute in the country has been in the forefront in working with the handloom and handicraft sector in the country through design intervention, knowledge and technology sharing and market linkage.
The event was organised with the support of the Ministry of Textiles and the Office of the Development Commissioner Handloom and Handicrafts.
