Danggo lays base for PMGSY road
MAWKYRWAT: PWD Minister and local legislator MM Danggo laid the foundation stone for the 7.7-km road project connecting Wahkaji with Nongmluh village in South West Khasi Hills on Monday.The project, which is sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna (PMGSY) for Rs 12.28 crore, when completed will benefit villagers of Wahkaji-Phlangdiloin-Nongmluh area. Danggo said he was happy to fulfil people’s demand. The road will help improving local economy, he added.Recalling an earlier experience of visiting the place, the minister said he had to walk for hours as there was no motorable road. Danggo sought people’s co-operation in extending the government’s development projects. Among the guests were Ranikor MDC Manstudy Nongrem, Executive Engineer PWD (Roads) of Ranikor F. CRPF ready to help peopleat all times
TURA: The 120 Bn CRPF has conveyed its willingness to give any kind of help it can to the people of Garo Hills at all times. The assurance was given by its commandant, B C Dalbehera during a series of civic action programmes organised by the force under North and East Garo Hills districts in an effort to improve police-public relations in the region. As part of the programme, a football match between Mendipathar and Babupara Club was organised recently followed by distribution of sports items. A free medical checkup with the help of Dr Rejia Sangma, PHC Mendipathar was also organised at the venue under the supervision of Dr Gabriel Taye, Senior Medical Officer, CRPF. Another similar programme was also organised at Chisobibra Lower Primary School under Samanda Block in East Garo Hills District in which Dr Rikrak Napak of Samanda PHC and Senior Medical Officer of the CRPF, Dr Gabriel Taye conducted check-ups on patients. Solar lantern & essential medicines were also distributed to the needy villages of Gitokgri, Ganinggri, Ganingbibra, Chisobibra, Jomegri, Merongri, Rambogri.
Club formed to boost farming, avail govt schemes
JOWAI: The Chankylliang Development Society on Saturday formed the Psiar Farmers’ Club at Psiar village in West Jaintia Hills with a view to encourage and improve farming activities in the border area. Executive director of the Society, D Shadap informed that the main aim of forming the club was to avail various government schemes. The organisation is also giving special focus on market linkage of ginger, turmeric and broomstick. “The club will also support residents left out by the block office or the district,” Shadap said. CKDS is also planning to open a helpdesk and information centre soon in the district headquarter so as to help the people cope with the problems.
College without maths teacher for four months
JOWAI: The state government has failed to appoint Mathematics teacher at Kiang Nangbah Government College in Jowai for more than four months.The college has a shortage of teaching staff both in Science and Arts sections. There is a shortage of teachers in English, Political Science, Economics, History, Botany, Physics and Chemistry.The principal told media persons here on Monday that the college has nine vacancies to be filled up by the Directorate of Education Department.Sources also informed that the department decided to appoint temporary teachers but due to their busy schedule attending various programmes with ministers, the department has not filled any vacancies laying vacant in the college.Kiang Nangbah Government College, which still has the higher secondary section, has not even appointed teachers permanently. All teachers were appointed on 59-day contract. “Their appointments have to be renewed every 59 days,” the sources said. “When the government did not appoint them permanently, they are insecure. They join today and leave tomorrow thereby affecting the smooth functioning of the institution,” the sources added. “I have written to the Director of MBoSE requesting him to look into the matter seriously and to find out ways and means to appoint a maths teacher”, the Principal OU Lyngdoh said.
Boy drugged on train from NGH
RESUBELPARA: A 21-year-old boy was drugged by miscreants on the train near Dudnoi on Monday. Chigara K Sangma, a student of BA final year at Sankardev College, was on his trip to Shillong. Instead of availing himself of car services, he bought train tickets as they were cheaper. After reaching Dudnoi, Sangma met a “strange companion” who shared biscuits and snacks inside his railway compartment. Though Chigara refused to take tea with the stranger he took biscuits which the other passenger gave from a new packet. The boy was found with a head injury near the Guwahati Main Railway junction.While everyone suspected him to be a drunk, a driver from Guwahati who knew him dialled his father’s number. Then a boy who is from Haluapara from the same town and also a student of Polytechnic Institute found Chigara. He brought Chigara back to Resubelpara Civil Hospital. An FIR was filed after doctors found out that he was drugged. The police officer rushed immediately and took neccesary steps to nabbeded railway Gunda in Mendipathar Guwahati line.
Tura trader passes away
TURA: A well known trader from Tura bazaar and a senior citizen from the trading community, Satyanarayan Khandelwal passed away in Jaipur following a cardiac arrest on Saturday. He was 66. Khandelwal was among the first batch of students to pass out from the Tura Government College.He joined the business profession and started a retail business in the name of Umrao Singh Jaynarayan. He later went into the wholesale business as well and his store next to Rikman Hotel was extremely popular with consumers of Tura town. Traders of Tura bazaar downed their shutters for two hours on Monday afternoon as a mark of respect for the late businessman.
Agricultural education day
Tura: Central Agricultural University (Imphal), College of Home Science, Tura, Meghalaya observed “Agricultural Education Day” on Monday for school students. The college organised an essay writing and art competition for school students on the occasion of birth anniversary of the first president of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. A total of 30 school students of classes XI and XII standard from Tura participated in the competition. Dr. Lakshmi Dhar Hatai, Asstt. Prof. (Agril. Econ) organised the programme and delivered a lecture on the topic “Career in Agriculture” on this day and highlighted the significance of agriculture and motivated the students to put their best efforts in shaping the career in the field of agriculture and inspired to engage in farming as agri-entrepreneur. A visit to departments and laboratories was also organized to showcase the technology related to community science.
Hindi seminar held
Shillong: India Meteorological Department organised an All India Inter Ministerial/ Inter Departmental Hindi Seminar on December 4 and 5. The inaugural function was held at State Convention Centre (Pinewood Hotel Annex.), Shillong on December 4. The function was chaired by Dr. K. J. Ramesh, Director General of Meteorology, India Meteorological Department. He said that organising Hindi seminars in non Hindi speaking states will propagate use of official language Hindi. Dr. S.O. Shaw, Deputy Director General of Meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati and Dr. A.C. Lyngdoh, Director, Central Seismological Observatory, Shillong expressed their happiness for conducting such type of seminars. Reva Sharma, Deputy Director (Official Language), I.M.D. HQ said that it is a great moment to connect people of North-East with Hindi.
