NONGPOH: The Khasi Students’ Union at Raid Nongtung has raised concerns over the repeated harassment by Assam police that is also hindering development projects.
Edmund Shadap, the KSU president of the area, told reporters on Tuesday that residents of Block II of Raid Nongtung on the Meghalaya-Assam border are living in distress and are insecure.
“The Assam government through the police department has not only disturbed the peace and tranquility among the locals but also affected several developmental works run by the state,” he said.
Condemning the Assam police action, KSU circle general secretary Aloysius Bina said on November 29, the Assam police came to Umwang village and forced local leaders to dismantle the foundation stone of a KHADC project for construction of a playground.
The police also asked them to get a no objection certificate from the deputy commissioner of Karbi Anglong.
“The union is concerned about the step-motherly attitude of the Meghalaya government toward the problems of the people of border areas and this has encouraged the Assam government to continue harassing our people,” the KSU leaders said.
Other projects which have been hampered are construction of an eri silk house, which was stopped by the Assam police, and power connection to border villages being carried out by MePDCL.
KSU blamed the state government for not acting on Assam’s proposal to set up a police outpost at Umru.
The union had decided to convene a meeting with village leaders and residents of the border area. It also urged the government to find solution to the problems.
