SHILLONG: The High Court of Meghalaya on Wednesday observed that it is an undisputed fact that teachers in the state are not getting their dues which they deserve and the state government is avoiding its responsibility on some pretext or the other.
During the hearing of the case filed by the Greater Phulbari Area Deficit School against the state government, Judge SR Sen said the HRD Ministry was made a party so that it can assist the court on how to rescue and redress the grievances of the deprived teachers.
The judge also said the Centre or the ministry definitely has a role to play when teachers are living from hand to mouth.
After the central government failed to file any reply or affidavit in this regard, the judge asked the ministry to give a detailed statement of the funds allotted for salary, pension, house rent allowance, medical and other allowances to the state for teachers and to file the affidavit.
“Once again, I repeat that teachers are the backbone of the society and they cannot be avoided or neglected,” the judge said.
The matter will come up for hearing after winter vacation for affidavit from the Ministry of HRD and the financial status report allotted to Meghalaya for teachers.
