WGH teacher fraudulently withdraws over Rs 13 lakh
SHILLONG: A teacher in West Garo Hills has allegedly withdrew grant in aid amounting Rs. 13,59,194 by producing fake certificate. The Joint Director of School Education & Literacy, has lodged a complaint that Md. Ali Akbor, Science teacher of Garodubi Higher Secondary School, withdrew Science Grant-in-aid amounting Rs. 13,59,194 from May 15 to August 31, 2017.

Youths held for pelting stones in West Jaintia Hills
SHILLONG: Two persons in West Jaintia Hills, were arrested for pelting stone in a prayer house. On December 10 around 8 pm, while members of Jowai Muslim Union were offering prayers in their prayer house at Chahtngit (Wahgate) village, two miscreants identified as Wanmi Suchiang and Ailad Dkhar pelted stones at the prayer house, police said. The accused has been arrested Wanmi Suchiang and Ailad Dkhar.

Tyisam fest begins in Baghmara
TURA: The much awaited two-day ‘Tyisam Festival’ began at Simsang beach in Baghmara in South Garo Hills on Wednesday. The festival is being organised by the district administration in collaboration with government departments. Local MLA of Siju-Rongara Constituency Rophul S Marak, told the gathering of people from different parts of Garo Hills as well as the state and outside, “Our dialects may defer, we may belong to a different background but our identity and our vision are the same. Let us join our hands together in building our society for a better tomorrow.”

Statewide sports talent hunt begins
SHILLONG: The Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs in collaboration with Super Sports and Projects and Primco Testing System will conduct a statewide talent identification programme for all sports. The first phase of testing will be conducted for young sports persons between the age group of 6-18 years. The programme started from Ampati on Wednesday. The remaining dates and venues are as follows — December 14 in Williamnagar, December 15 in Tura, December 16 in Bhoirymbong, December 19 in Mawkyrwat, December 20 in Khliehriat, December 21 in Jowai and on December 22 and 23 in Shillong. Sports enthusiasts have to register themselves at the office of the respective district sports office on or before the dates of testing.

Mawsynram College organises special camp
SHILLONG: The Mawsynram Border Area College, NSS unit has organised a special camp at Phlangmawsyrpat, its adopted village, from December 4 to 9. 40 NSS volunteers lead by its Programme Officer R. Kharbuki endeavoured to construct check dam, washing area and bathroom at PhodJapung stream. These constructions were inaugurated on Tuesday, in the presence of Headman P. Kynter, secretary D. Ryiah, Principal in-charge of the College P.Bang, Dr. K. Kumar, its staff and volunteers. Speaking in the inaugural programme, Principal in-charge expressed gratitude to those who had contributed in creating such useful infrastructure. Headman of the village while appreciating the initiative taken by the College, said these infrastructures will benefit the residents of the village as a whole.
Silver jubilee celebrations of Byrnihat school conclude
NONGPOH: The silver jubilee celebration of Rangsakona Secondary School, Byrnihat concluded on Wednesday marking 25 years of the institution’s journey in imparting quality education among the youths of Byrnihat area. Rangsakona Secondary School, Byrnihat was established in the year 1991 as a primary school with the objective of providing quality education among underprivileged children of the village. With the untiring efforts and dedication of the school management committee, the school has now been upgraded to the secondary level. Local MDC of Jirang constituency, Victor Ranee graced the closing ceremony as chief guest while Sosthenus Sohtun, a prominent leader of Byrnihat, was the guest of honour. Songs and dance were performed by the school children at the function. The school management also distributed mementos and medals among the winners of various competitions.

Senior citizens’ scheme reaches WJH
JOWAI: Senior citizens of East Jaintia Hills received aids and assistive devices under the Rashtrita Vayoshri Yojana, the central scheme for senior citizens below poverty line (BPL) who are suffering from age-related physical impairment, on Wednesday. Union Minister Krishan Pal Gurjar distributed the devices. The scheme is expected to benefit over 5 lakh senior citizens over a period of three years.
