PM concern over rise in crimes against women, kids

SHILLONG: Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has expressed concern over the growing crimes against women and children in the state.
Speaking at the BJP rally at Polo Ground here, Modi said crimes against women and children in the state have increased in the past few years despite Meghalaya being a matrilineal state.
The Prime Minister also said girls are no longer secure in the state.
Meanwhile, statistics of Meghalaya police show that a whopping 1,120 crime against women cases were reported in the state between 2014 and 2016.
The statistics show 388 cases of crime against women in the year 2014, followed by 334 in 2015 while the numbers increased to 398 in 2016.
As far as crimes against children are concerned, 710 cases were reported during the same period.
In the year 2014, the number of crime cases against children reported in the state was 213 while it shot up to 257 in the year 2015.
Last year, 240 crime cases against children were reported in the state.
