SHILLONG: The eight rebel legislators will join NPP on January 4 at a public rally to be held at Polo Grounds.
Ending speculation about the entry of eight legislators, NPP president WR Kharlukhi confirmed January 4 as the date of joining.
The legislators who are set to join NPP are Prestone Tynsong, Rowell Lyngdoh, Comingone Ymbon, Sniawbhalang Dhar and Ngaitlang Dhar (all Congress), UDP’s Remington Pyngrope, and independents Stephanson Mukhim and Hopeful Bamon.
The Congress will be the worst affected in the exodus of the legislators.
Recently, Congress member PN Syiem quit as MLA and joined the newly formed PDF. Later, he resigned from the Congress.
The style of functioning of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma is cited as the reason for many legislators to quit the party.
Kharlukhi said the Congress legislators have no other choice than to leave as their many grievances were not addressed by AICC.
According to Kharlukhi, AICC had given unlimited power to the chief minister and hence the Congress legislators are helpless. “Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely,” he added.
