SHILLONG: Despite an appeal from NPP and resentment among employees, the state government will go ahead with the decision to have working days on Thursday and Friday.
This is for the first time that the Congress-led government has decided not to grant compensatory holidays for government employees for two days which otherwise would have helped them to celebrate Christmas and New Year at a stretch.
The convention was that the government staff will have to work two Saturdays in the New Year for availing the working days end of December.
However with the new decision, the difficulties are for the employees from Garo Hills who will have to travel back to Shillong to attend to their duties in various offices, including Secretariat.
The reason cited by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma was that arrears following the implementation of the Fifth Pay Commission will have to be prepared during these days.
However, the state government employees have already availed the new pay before Christmas.
