TURA: The new year in Garo Hills began on a chilling note with the news of a mentally challenged man entering a house and brutally murdering an infant boy and attacking the mother following which he was beaten to death by villagers in a remote village in South Garo Hills.

The incident took place on January 1st evening, at around 5:30 PM, when the 25-year-old mentally challenged man Galmit Ch Sangma of Chenggini village went to the neighbouring village of New Rongara and entered the house of Barning R Marak.

Carrying an axe, he attacked the mother of the house, Rongilla D Sangma, and her one-and-a-half-year- old son Manrikkam leading to the child’s death. The mother was left critically injured from the attack.
