TURA: A trader from Assam who was abducted on December 31 has been released near the Garo Hills border at Kukurkata, thanks to a section of alert villagers.
The three-member gang of abductors had no option but to release Samad Ali, the trader from Krishnai town near Dudhnoi, after their plan of retaining him in custody inside North Garo Hills was foiled by villagers.
The villagers alerted the police after spotting the group. Thereafter, they along with the police chased the abductors, forcing the group to retreat into Assam.
On Wednesday, the abductors released Ali at Kukurkata after assaulting him. However, they reportedly secured a ransom from the family, amounting to several lakhs of rupees.
