SHILLONG: Two local activists, Agnes Kharshiing and Angela Rangad, have filed an FIR against former South Shillong legislator Sanbor Shullai accusing him of nepotism.
The complaint was based on an RTI application filed by Banri Kupar Wahlang, a citizen, last October that showed that Shullai used his power to get jobs for his daughters Evangeline Rabon and Vanessa Rabon.
While the former is a reviser the latter is a PA to the deputy speaker in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
The activists said the appointment of Vanessa “is unconstitutional”.
“The FIR alleged that the former MLA also appointed his nephew Ricky Shullai as peon before he was elected as an MDC, his wife’s nephew M Rabon as junior watch and ward and M Rabon’s wife Gloria Hujon as receptionist, his niece Wansalan Shullai as assistant librarian in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretariat,” the FIR stated.
According to the FIR, the appointments were not in compliance with rules.
“No procedures for recruitment were followed as is mandated in the law and by abusing his position, power, authority, he, as a lawmaker, has bypassed the rules laid down by the government… By this act the government has been cheated as the legislator has managed to loot public money to benefit close relatives…,” the complaint added.
The FIR also revealed that Ricky Shullai, who is an MDC now, is still shown as an employee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretariat as the RTI reply dated August 24 last mentions his name even after his winning the KHADC elections.
The activists questioned who was drawing the salary in the name of Ricky and demanded inquiry.
“If any manipulation arises and if Ricky Shullai has been receiving the salary even after his appointment as MDC, those involved have to be booked for cheating,” the complainants added.
The complainants also said the delay in filing FIR was because of seeking more RTI information on the procedures of recruitment from departments concerned.
Shullai recently quit NCP to join BJP and is likely to get the ticket for the Assembly elections.
