SHILLONG: A relatively new regional party from Manipur, North East India Development Party (NEIDP), on Friday announced it would contest the Meghalaya Assembly elections and release the list of candidates by this month.
Formed in 2015, NEIDP was registered with the Election Commission of India in 2016. The party contested the 2017 elections to Manipur Legislative Assembly and secured 3.6 per cent of the total votes polled.
Subsequently in the panchayat elections held in the last quarter of 2017, the party-sponsored candidates secured 4.8 per cent of the total votes.
Addressing reporters, K Ravindran, political advisor to the party said, “We are here to create awareness about our party and we have also interacted with a number of potential candidates. By the end of this month we will finalise the names of candidates to contest in the upcoming elections.”
He further informed that the party is also setting up the state level adhoc committee with an intention to look after election matters in the state.
“We have also got feelers from other political parties for an alignment and that option is also open to us,” he said.
