SHILLONG: A case has been registered against South Shillong MLA and former Deputy Speaker, Sanbor Shullai by the police department following an FIR filed by two activists on allegations of nepotism in the appointment of various posts in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Davis Marak said a case was registered under the Meghalaya Prevention of Corruption Act and a gazette officer is investigating the case.
Two local activists, Agnes Kharshiing and Angela Rangad, have filed an FIR against Shullai, accusing him of nepotism.
Shullai, who was inducted into the BJP recently, had filed a counter FIR against Kharshiing and Rangad stating that the employees were recruited as per rules and he had no role to play in the selection process.
Marak said Shullai’s counter FIR is being examined.
“We are examining it on whether it falls under cognizable civil or criminal defamation,” he said.
Asked whether Shullai would be interrogated by the police department, Marak pointed out that an investigating agency could not be prevented from questioning any accused legislator.
However, he pointed out that the Speaker of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly should be informed prior to any move to arrest the legislator.
