SHILLONG: NCP central leader Praful Patel will kick off the election campaign of the party by holding conventions in Tura and Shillong on January 16 and 17, respectively.
The working president of NCP, Vijay Raj, said the party is planning to put up candidates in all the 24 seats in Garo Hills.
Patel’s visit is aimed at revamping NCP in both Garo Hills and Khasi Hills.
After former NCP leader PA Sangma left the party and formed NPP, the popularity of NCP was on the decline.
Though the party had two MLAs — Sanbor Shullai and Marthon Sangma — their entry into BJP and the Congress, respectively, have also weakened the party.
Independent legislator Saleng Sangma is set to take over as the new president of NCP after Shullai was removed.
Saleng said he would assume charge within a few days.
He will also resign as MLA either on Thursday or Friday.
