SHILLONG: The state Lok Janashakti Party (LJP) led by its president Jamil Ahmed has submitted a memorandum to the Governor, Ganga Prasad on Thursday which featured certain issues and challenges faced by the state.
The state unit of LJP demanded the inclusion of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo languages in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution of India.
With regard to empowerment of traditional heads and to preserve, protect the identity of indigenous people, the state LJP has called for early passing and implementation of Village Administration Bill (VAB).
Referring to plight of farmers, the party also demanded waiver of loans of the farmers’ in the state of Meghalaya.
The state unit also sought the intervention of Prime Minister’s Office in some issues of the state with regard to the boundary dispute between Meghalaya and Assam.
On the other hand, apart from the PMO’s intervention, the state LJP also felt a CBI inquiry was needed to verify whether schemes in the state were utilised properly or not.
In the memorandum, Ahmed stated about the infrastructure under development of the State since 1972.
He argued that there was no development in rural areas, no roads, electricity condition was erratic, no health centre in villages.
He also raised the issue of education scam, the growing youth unemployment, effect on the economy due to NGT ban on coal mining etc.
Ahmed also pointed out that the PMO should intervene to initiate peace negotiations from the militant organizations existing in Meghalaya.
Speaking to reporters, he said that the Governor has assured them that he would look into the matter.
