SHILLONG: The Mahila Congress Committee has termed the National People’s Party (NPP) as “team B” of BJP and accused Conrad Sangma of helping the saffron entity make inroads in Meghalaya.
Addressing the party’s women workers in the city on Thursday, Congress Mahila chief Sushmita Dev said voting for NPP would mean voting for BJP. She cited the example of Manipur where NPP helped the saffron party form government and the Congress, despite winning more seats than BJP, lost on the magic number.
“If Conrad Sangma plays the role to bring saffron BJP in Meghalaya, it will be a shame to his legacy. If he is the true son of Meghalaya, he should fight the saffron party instead of bringing in communal forces here,” Dev said.
“We must protect Shillong from communal forces and we will throw out a communal party like BJP from the North East,” she added.
The Congress, which has been pilloried several times by BJP for corruption and scams, got the opportunity on Thursday to question the honesty and integrity of senior BJP leaders, including party president Amit Shah.
Calling Shah the “king of black money”, Dev questioned how his son Jay and his company amassed such wealth within a short period of time.
The Congress’s central leadership is also putting pressure on BJP to come clean on Jay Shah’s business.
“He (Amit Shah) will use the cash in the upcoming Assembly polls… if anybody has done the biggest scam in the country it is Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Rafale deal (with France),” she added.
The Centre has signed an agreement to buy 36 Rafale fighter jets from the French company Dassault Aviation SA.
NE back-up
The Congress leader alleged that Modi and “his army of RSS” want Meghalaya and other northeastern states because “BJP will lose in many northern states in the 2019 Assembly elections and it wants to cover the loss in the North East”.
“I guarantee that it will divide and destroy the peace of Meghalaya,” Dev said as she taunted Modi’s promises of development. She added that the Prime Minister pledges to make every state he visits a ‘model state’.
Talking about development in Meghalaya, Dev pointed out that the four-lane Shillong-Guwahati road was made by the Congress.
Women’s role
Dev stressed the role of women in the upcoming Assembly polls and she asked the women workers of the party to visit every house and explain BJP’s ill intention.
“RSS and Narendra Modi are against women empowerment and this is the reason why they have not implemented 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament,” she said at the meeting at the State Central Library auditorium. Shillong MP Vincent Pala and other central leaders were also present.
