Sanbor Shullai inaugurates PWD road projects
SHILLONG: The MCIC in collaboration with the Dorbar Shnong of Lower Lumparing and Dorbar Shnong Madan Laban organised a foundation stone laying ceremony on Friday for the construction of four PWD road projects worth Rs 1,40,64,000 in Mawnei, Jumor Lane Road, Dhobighat, Streamlet Road, Rahman Road, and Bridge Point at Madan Laban which was initiated, recommended and inaugurated by former MLA Sanbor Shullai who was present as the chief guest.
Shullai expressed his sincere thanks to all land owners of Greater Laban and Greater Lumparing Area for donating their lands for the projects.
He also requested the members of the MCIC to monitor all the projects in collaboration with the Dorbar Shnong of Greater Laban and Greater Lumparing along with the officials of PWD departments as per the specifications laid down by the concerned departments for to ensure quality for the benefit, welfare and interest of the general public of the19th South Shillong Constituency.
13 MPS officers bag promotions

SHILLONG: The state government has promoted as many as 13 junior grade MPS officers to senior grade officers in the rank of Additional Superintendent and Deputy Commandant.
The thirteen officers are Moon Hubert Khongshei, Galbraith W. Momin, Bloyer Talang, Chauenlai Sangma, Ploster Syiem, T.C Chacko, Bolaram Kundu, Sajan Paul, Wanpynbiang Sumer, Kamakhya Prasad, Gautam Phukan, Shoster Marsing and Cherry Shadap.
As per the recommendations of the Departmental Promotions Committee, Moon Hubert Khongshei has been posted as Deputy Commandant, 3rd MLP Battalion, Khliehtyrshi, Jowai, while Galbraith W Momin has been posted as 2nd in command, 2nd MLP Battalion, Goeragre, West Garo Hills.
Bloyer Talang will continue his deputation with the Prison Department and Chauenlai Sangma has been posted as Additional Superintendent, SF-10, Shillong.
According to the notification issued on January 10, Ploster Syiem will now take on the duties of the Deputy Commandant, 5th Battalion, East Garo Hills, whereas T C Chacko has been posted as Additional Superintendent, SF-10, Shillong.
Bolaram Kundu has been posted as Additional Superintendent, North Garo Hills, while Sajan Paul has been posted as Deputy Commandant, 3rd MLP Battalion, Khliehtyrshi, Jowai.
Wanpynbiang Sumer will now be transferred and posted as Deputy Commandant, 5th Battalion, East Garo Hills whereas Kamakhya Prasad has been transferred to 4th MLP Battalion, Sohpian, Nongstoin.
Gautam Phukan will be 2nd in command, 1st MLP Battalion, Mawiong whereas Shoster Marsing is now posted as Deputy Commandant, 6th MLP Battalion.
Meanwhile, Cherry Shadap has been transferred to 3rd MLP Battalion, Khliehtyrshi, Jowai, as Deputy Commandant.
LJP writes to Guv on VAB, farmers’ plight & infra devp

SHILLONG: The state Lok Janashakti Party (LJP), led by its president Jamil Ahmed, submitted a memorandum to Governor Ganga Prasad on Thursday to bring to his notice the challenges that the state faces and demanded CBI inquiry to verify whether schemes were utilised properly.
Among the issues that LJP flagged in its memorandum are inclusion of the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule and empowerment of traditional heads.
The party said the Village Administration Bill is necessary to preserve and protect the identity of indigenous people.
LJP also raised concern over the plight of farmers in the state and demanded that their loans be waived.
The state unit also sought the intervention of the Prime Minister’s Office in some issues like the decades-old boundary line dispute between Meghalaya and Assam.
In the memorandum, Ahmed stated about the infrastructure under-development in the state since 1972.
Ahmed pointed out that there was no development in rural areas, no roads, electricity supply was erratic and no health centres in villages. He raised the issue of education scam, the growing youth unemployment, effect of the economy due to NGT ban on coal mining.
Ahmed also said the PMO should intervene to initiate peace negotiations from the militant organisations existing in Meghalaya.
Speaking to reporters, he said that the governor assured them that he would look into the matter.
Meeting on Media Certification and Monitoring held
SHILLONG: The District Election Officer, East Khasi Hills on Friday met the members of the Media Certification and Monitoring Committee (MC & MC), Returning Officers and Local Cable Network Operators for a briefing with respect to the instructions of the Election Commission of India on the use of social media in election campaign and role of the MC & MC.
In the meeting, the District Election Officer, while explaining the functions of the MC & MC which examines complaints/issues of paid news through a monitoring arrangement that will scan the print media, electronic media, cable network, etc and the adverse effects of paid news, said that self regulation by the media and stakeholders is needed to ensure elimination of all such instances of suspected paid news, while reiterating the strict use of existing mechanism to curb the menace of paid news in the electoral process.
NEHU to start facilities for differently-abled

SHILLONG: The vice-chancellor of North-Eastern Hill University has assured the students’ union that the central university will introduce facilities for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to ensure that students of the region find a place to carry forward their educational dreams.
The finance secretary of NEHU Students’ Union, Rangdajied Marwein, said the union met the VC, SK Srivastava, and asked him to address the problems faced by the PWDs.
“We have told him to maintain facilities for all students who are disabled,” he said over the phone.
Submitting a memorandum to the VC on Friday, Marwein said Srivastava responded positively to Marwein assuring him that NEHU will fulfil all facilities for differently abled students of the region and urged students to apply in the university.
Marwein lauded the VC for introducing ramps in all departments of the following the union’s persuasion.
3 extortionists nabbed

TURA: Three youths from East Garo Hills have been arrested for allegedly trying to extort money from a businessman by using the name of the banned GNLA outfit.
The three criminals, Wilberth T Sangma (20) of Chidimit Nengsat, Wister N Marak (20) of Dawagittinggre and Salgra Ch Sangma (25) of Mangsang Mari A’pal, served a demand note to a businessman of Nangapa bazaar on January 9.The extortionists demanded a sum of Rs 4.5 lakh from the businessman and to instill fear on their victim even dispatched one live round of AK 47 bullet along with the letter. All three were arrested on Thursday night from three different locations.
Unclaimed body
On January 8, one unknown male was found lying dead on the roadside near Marvelene Guest House in Rilbong. The body was sent to SDM&HO Civil Hospital, Shillong, for postmortem and is now being kept in the Civil Hospital Morgue for identification. The deceased appears to be in his early to mid-thirties, thinly built, approximately 5’2″ tall with a dark complexion and was found wearing a brown half sweater, dark blue muffler, blue tracksuit jacket, blue shirt, blue jeans and black canvas shoes.
On January 10, one unknown male was found dead at Umkaliar, Demseiniong, Shillong. The body was sent to SDM&HO Civil Hospital for postmortem and is now kept in the Civil Hospital Morgue for identification and claiming. The deceased appears to be a non-tribal between 35 to 40 years of age.
Missing
One Sunil Sinha (50 years), father of Pooja Sinha of Bhangaghar, Guwahati, has been reported missing from Rynjah, Shillong, since December 16, 2017.
