TURA: The Christmas and New Year celebrations may have ended two weeks ago, but the atmosphere of joy and revelry continues in the town of Nongalbibra in South Garo Hills which hosted a mega Song Kristan competition on Thursday.
Organised by the Nongalbibra Song Kristan Dance Competition Committee, Siju-Rongara legislator Rophul S. Marak attended the event as chief guest.
This was the 8th annual competition in which nine Song Kristan dance teams took part vying for the trophy along with a Rs 50,000 cash prize. As many as 3,000 spectators were in attendance as the Nongalbibra Colony team emerged as overall champions in the competition.
Addressing the crowd, Marak said there is immense potential for the promotion of Song Kristan in Garo Hills and called for more support in making this annual post-Christmas celebration a success.
“This unique tradition has the potential to attract tourists to Garo Hills and needs to be promoted on a larger scale. Song Kristan has endured through centuries in Garo Hills and will continue to be a part of our lives each year,” said Marak.
“Our celebration of the Christmas season ends with this competition. We want to ensure the tradition of our forefathers continues with such unique celebrations and friendly competition,” said president of the committee, Bijesh G. Momin.
