SHILLONG: Former KHNAM MLA, Lambor Malngiang who is contesting the Assembly elections as an Independent candidate from Nongkrem constituency, has asserted that Independent MLAs would play a major role in the formation of the new government in the state.
Speaking to reporters after donating an ambulance to Nongkrem constituency, Malngiang said Meghalaya would see a fractured mandate this time and the role of Independent MLAs would be the most important this time.
The 13 Independent MLAs elected in the 2013 polls however could not play a major role.
He slammed the regional parties, saying they would not make much of an impact in the polls.
Malngiang said the same political parties who were talking about regional forces were separated in the last elections.
Maintaining that people want change, he said, “People now don’t look at the party of the candidates but look for a person who can serve them and can help them in times of crisis.”
Castigating BJP, he said that the party has a hidden agenda of “ghar wapsi” and they are trying to change the democratic system of the state through VHP and RSS.
“We will not allow such communal forces to participate in the state,” he told reporters.
He also felt that most of the regional parties in the state are working hand in glove with BJP, be it NPP or United Democratic Party, which is a part of the North East Democratic Alliance formed by BJP leader, Himanta Biswa Sarma.
He also hoped that the ambulance would help people in many ways, especially during emergency.
