Youth Congress meeting held
Shillong: A general meeting of the North Shillong Youth Congress was held on Monday at the Community Hall of the Dorbar Shnong Mawkhar, organised by the North Shillong Block Congress Committee. More than 500 youth congress members from across the constituency attended the meeting. A power point presentation on the achievements of the MUA Govt in the state was also presented before the gathering. Vijay Laxmi Sadho, Secretary AICC i/c Meghalaya, W H D Syngkon, party candidate from North Shillong, Richard Marak, President Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress and Arwan Tariang, Working President of the North Shillong BCC attended the meeting.

NPP ticket aspirant resigns
TURA: A former district programme manager of the state government’s DRDA who was one of the ticket aspirants from National People’s Party to contest the upcoming state elections from Mahendraganj constituency has resigned. The former government official, Robert S Sangma, had applied for the NPP ticket to take on sitting Congress legislator and chief minister Mukul Sangma’s wife, Dikkanchi D Shira. However, with NPP deciding to allocate the Mahendraganj party ticket to Sanjay A Sangma, Robert has decided to step down and contest as an Independent. The party candidate Sanjay A Sangma is the brother-in-law of NPP party chief and Tura MP Conrad Sangma. Annoyed by the party decision, the supporters of Robert Sangma gathered at his residence and decided to field him as an Independent from Mahendraganj.

PDF Sohra unit holds meeting
SHILLONG: People’s Democratic Front (PDF) candidate for the forthcoming Assembly elections from Sohra, Gavin Miguel Mylliem, convened a meeting of the People’s Democratic Front Zonal Committee Sohra Constituency at Community Hall, Mawkdok village. Mylliem, who is the son of former Chief Secretary WMS Pariat, stated that he wanted to contest the election on his own free will to serve the people. Mylliem was also elected as president of PDF Zonal Committee Sohra constituency. The chairman of PDF PN Syiem was also present.
KHNAM youth prez removed
SHILLONG: The KHNAM Mawlai Constituency Committee and the Mawlai Youth Wing Circle has decided to remove Carlos Rapsang from the post of president from Mawlai Youth Wing. In a statement issued here, chairman of Mawlai Constituency committee, Freewell Marpna stated that a joint executive committee meeting on January 13 discussed the matter in which a letter was also sent to Rapsang. In place of Rapsang, Nangteibor Kharjana was elected as the working president of the youth wing

Disruption of city water supply
SHILLONG: Water supply in some areas of the city will be suspended on Tuesday and the same condition will continue till Wednesday for emergency repair works due to the bursting of pipe in a city locality. The areas to be affected are whole of Lachumiere, Secretariat Hill, Keating Road, Bivar Road, parts of Mawlai Mawroh, Lawmali, Police Bazar, Oakland, Jail Road, parts of Upland road, Laitumkhrah. A PHE official said that every effort is being made to complete the repair work by January 17.

Veteran’s complex inaugurated
Shillong: Lt Gen DS Ahuja, GOC 101 Area, inaugurated the newly created integrated Veterans Complex in Shillong on Monday. The complex will provide a wide range of veteran care and support services, and also act as a single point of contact to the veterans, widows and their dependents. The ceremony was attended by senior serving and retired officers and members of the veteran fraternity. The complex houses Veterans Branch, ECHS Branch and Pension Facilitation Centre (Suvigya). The inauguration of the complex coincided with Army Day and Veterans Day.

Walkathon to be organised
SHILLONG: As part of the Silver Jubilee celebration of the National Commission for Women, the Meghalaya State Commission for Women in collaboration with Sports Department Meghalaya will organise a Walkathon on January 20 at 7am. It will be flagged off from Madan Iewrynghep by Additional Chief Secretary, H.Marwein. The event is for under 18 years and above 18 years (male and female). Those who are interested can register in the office of the District Sports Officer, East Khasi Hills, J.N.Sports Complex, Polo during office hours. Last date of registration is on January 19. The Under-18 should bring along with them a photo copy of birth certificate and the above 18 will have to bring the photo copy of voter’s id.

Awareness programme
TURA: In view of the upcoming elections, awareness and training for Booth Level Officers (BLOs) for all polling stations under West Garo Hills was held on Monday at the District Auditorium in Tura. During the training programme Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Ram Singh said that awareness is necessary since Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) is being introduced for the first time during polls in Meghalaya which would be demonstrated in all the polling stations under West Garo Hills District by the respective Sector Officers in collaboration with BLOs. The functioning and operating of the EVMs with the VVPAT system was also demonstrated for the BLOs.

Training underway in SWGH
Ampati: As part of its preparedness for the upcoming Assembly Elections 2018, the Deputy Commissioner (Election), South West Garo Hills held a series of meetings, briefings and trainings for concerned ROs, AROs, Sector Officers, police personnel and polling personnel as well as the political parties of the district since the first week of January this year. To ensure that the political parties and its representatives are well versed with the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trial (VVPAT), awareness cum hands on training was conducted for the representatives of political parties after the handing over of the final publication of photo electoral rolls last week. The training was attended by the representatives of major political parties including BJP, NPP, INC and UDP. Likewise further trainings would also be conducted for the polling agents of the respective political parties for which the District Election Officer has requested the political parties to submit the list of names of their agents well in advance. First round of trainings has also been conducted last week.
