SHILLONG: The largest and the most advanced district of Meghalaya, East Khasi Hills is now open defecation free (ODF).
Deputy commissioner, PS Dkhar informed that the district was declared ODF a few days back.
“We have sent our report to the ministry and they have accepted our report,” he said.
However, the district Administration is awaiting the final certification from the Centre.
The criterion for declaring a district ODF is that each and every household in the district should have a toilet. “The concept of declaring the district ODF is all about having toilets in the household,” Dkhar said, even as he added that there was no issue as far as open defecation in the city was concerned as every household has a toilet.
“Even five to six tenants have one toilet in town,” he added.
The deputy commissioner further informed that people in the rural areas were being given Rs 12,000 for the construction of toilets under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan
Apart from East Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills district has also been declared ODF.
