SHILLONG: A court has sentenced a person under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act with rigorous imprisonment for three years for sexually assaulting a minor girl in West Jaintia Hills.
West Jaintia Hills superintendent of police, Vivek Syiem said that on May 22, 2015, an FIR was filed at Jowai police station by the mother of an 11-year-old girl residing in West Jaintia Hills district, that her daughter was raped the previous day by 20-year-old Wanmi Lyngdoh. The case was registered under Section 4 of the POCSO Act 2012 and it was investigated by the officer in-charge of Women police station, West Jaintia Hills, O. Tyngkan (now Inspector) and she submitted her charge sheet on August 3, 2015.
The case was tried in the court of Noor-Ain Khan (MHJS), Special Judge (POCSO), Jowai.
On January 15 this year, the judgment was delivered and Wanmi , who is a resident of Muthlong village, was convicted for sexual assault under Section 8 of the POCSO Act, 2012 for three years rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 1,000. In default of payment of fine, the convict will further undergo simple imprisonment of one month.
