SHILLONG: In a major blow to the Congress, the entire Congress unit in South Garo Hills has resigned from the party to support independent MLA, Samuel M Sangma in the forthcoming polls.
The District Mahila Congress Committee President, Diana Marak said despite being a Congress member for the last 15 years, they felt neglected by the High command of the party for the last about 15 years as neither the present Congress-led Government nor the previous one were serious enough to develop the South Garo Hills district. This is despite the fact that the State Government was receiving huge revenue from the district.
On the other hand, DCC president, Julias Sanmga said that neither the State nor the Central Government ever showed any seriousness for the development of the South Garo Hills region which shares its border with Bangladesh.
“Being a member of the Congress party, we failed to address the general grievances of the people of the district,” he said.
Apart from the Women and District Congress Committee President, the Youth Congress President Bughan Marak also resigned from their posts and primary membership of the party.
Independent MLA, Samuel M Sangma said the decision of the Congress workers to support him in the election has brightened his chance of winning the forthcoming polls.
“Their decision to support me has made me more confident of winning the polls,” he said.
