EJH police detains overloaded coal trucks

JOWAI/SHILLONG: Twelve trucks carrying coal illegally were detained in East Jaintia Hills and Ri Bhoi in the last two days. Police detained 11 overloaded coal trucks at a check point at Shohshrieh in the district on Wednesday. Some drivers were arrested while others escaped.The seized trucks were taken back to Khliehriat from Shohshrieh and again to Um-tyr-a weighbridge for measurement of the excess coal before they were compounded by the local court.
According to Khliehriat police, a case under appropriate section was registered against all trucks which illegally transport coal to Assam and Bangladesh.Most of the trucks seized were six-wheelers whereas those 10, 12 and 16-wheelers passed every police check gate undetected without valid transportation documents such as transit challans.In another incident, around 3 pm on Thursday, police intercepted a coal truck with Meghalaya registration driven by Dooshwa Phawa while attempting to avoid the weighbridge at 13th Mile, Byrnihat.
2 killed, several injured in separate accidents
Shillong: Two persons died and several were injured in separate accidents across the state in the last one week.
On January 13, a truck with Assam registration met with an accident at Kuliang in East Jaintia Hills. The handyman of the truck, Hamehuni Bthuh, died on the spot. Necessary formalities were observed.
Around 2.30am on January 16, a tempo with Meghalaya registration turned over at Malchapara in South West Garo Hills. The driver, Ranjit Hajong, and another occupant, Monjoy Hajong, sustained injuries and were admitted in Betasing PHC. Later, Monjoy succumbed to injuries.
In another incident on the same day around 11am, a Mahindra pick-up dashed against a motorcycle ridden by Ajanto Ch Sangma on Mankachar-Ampati Road at Thakuranbari in South West Garo Hills. Sangma sustained injuries and is under treatment.
In another accident in east Khasi Hills, a Hyundai Accent with Meghalaya registration collided with a Maruti car at Mylliembah around 6.15 pm. Wanhok Khongmawloh (28), who was driving the sedan, and two others in the car sustained injuries and were admitted in a hospital.
On January 16 around 10.45 am, a motorcycle ridden by Roswell Mawniuh (27) skidded at Barik Point. The rider sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment.
On January 15, a truck with Nagaland registration dashed against a hillock at Diengpasoh, Shillong bypass road. The handyman of the truck that was driven by Ram Dayal Paswan sustained injuries and was shifted to
NEIGRIHMS.
Training in handloom weaving concludes
SHILLONG: The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, had on Wednesday felicitated 21 trainees after they completed their 25-day training programme on handloom weaving.The training conducted by Nela Handloom Training cum Production Centre at Mawkasiang-Umroh used the new Flying 8 loom, developed by Andreas Mueller, a German expert on handloom, which can produce about 12 meters of eri cloth, instead of the conventional loom that use to produce only about 5 meters in a day. The trainees, some of whom have volunteered for this new Flying 8 loom, are all farmers from Khasi and Jaintia Hills.
National Voter’s Day
Shillong: Along with the rest of the country, the District Election Officer, West Khasi Hills District, Nongstoin will celebrate the 8th National Voter’s Day on January 25 at TRYSEM Hall, Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Nongstoin at 11 am. It will be under the theme “Accessible Election” with the objective to encourage more young voters to take part in the political process and facilitate Persons with Disabilities in the electoral process.
