Nongpoh: In what can be termed as a major upset to the sitting Congress legislator and MPCC President, Dr Celestine Lyngdoh, more than 2000 supporters of People Democratic Front (PDF) from 15 villages of Mawsyntai, Saiden and Umsawnongkharai area attended the public meeting and election campaign of PDF Umsning Constituency held at Saiden village on Friday.
This is being seen as a major political threat to Dr. Lyngdoh when the date of polls has been announced.
The meeting was also attended by top leaders of PDF including the KHADC CEM and Chairman of PDF, Mr Pynshngain N Syiem, PDF President Ivanlumlang Marbaniang, PDF candidate from Umsning Constituency, Jason Mawlong, PDF Working President and former leader of FKJGP, Emlang Lyttan, former KHADC CEM, RR Makdoh, headmen from several villages and others. Speaking at the meeting, PN Syiem expresses deep concern over lack of responsible representatives who can create laws and policies to protect the uniqueness of various tribes and their cultural traditions residing in the whole state and empower them.
He also stated various instances which led him to form the PDF as none of the legislators of different political parties at present have the responsibility to fight for the rights of the people while stating for instances the High Court verdict to scrap the power of headmen which has badly affected the traditional practice and the common people of the state especially the poor.
“As an elected legislator, it is our duty to create laws and police which will protect and safeguard the interest of various tribes residing in the state” Syiem said adding that it is sad to see that most of the legislators are busy for their own interest instead of the people.
Implementing central laws which is not familiar with the culture and tradition of the people is another concern, Syiem said while reminding the gathering on the National Green Tribunal order banning coal mining in the state as majority of the coal owners does not follow the Mines and Minerals (Regulation and Development) Act, 1957 as the state does not have its own mining policy.
He therefore urged the people of Umsning Constituency and the people of the state to give their strong support to PDF in the coming elections for a bright future of the generations to come.
President of the PDF, Ivanlumlang Marbaniang in his speech informed the public about various policies and laws that the PDF will implement if they were voted to power in the upcoming assembly elections.
Meanwhile, PDF candidate from Umsning Constituency in his speech promises the people that his foremost issue is including of the Khasi language in the eight schedule, creating laws to protect and safe guard the interest of the people of the state such as land, culture and also to create various policies for the farmer, the youth etc., which will brnefit the local people of the state.
The party also extend their gratitude to the headman of Saiden village, the DC and SP for allowing and give permission to hold such a successful public meeting.
