SHILLONG: The person who received a fake Rs 500 note while paying the cabbie at night was literally taken for a ride. However, it is yet unknown whether the driver was a dealer in counterfeits or was unaware of the fact that he was returning a forged banknote.
Speaking to The Shillong Times on condition of anonymity, the ride-hailer said that he had booked a vehicle at night from Police Bazar till Pynthorumkhrah for Rs 500 as he had luggage to carry with him.
Having handed over one Rs 2000 note to the driver, the passenger was handed back three Rs 500 notes one of which turned out to be a fake. However, the discovery was not instantaneous. It was only after a few days he found out that he had been duped when he gave his wife the banknote asking her to get some fish from the market.
The fake note is thicker and greener than the genuine one and had the inscription ‘Children Bank of India’ instead of Reserve Bank of India on it!
Interestingly, instead of the inscription, “I promise to pay the bearer the sum of five hundred rupees,” the writing on the fake note reads, “I promise to pay the bearer a sum of five hundred coupons.”
