SHILLONG: The Shillong MP and working president of Congress, Vincent Pala, replied to the show-cause notice issued to him by the returning officer of Nongstoin over the alleged violation of model code of conduct.
Pala, along with HSPDP candidate from Nongstoin D Jyndiang, had on February 7 attended a foundation stone laying function in West Khasi Hills. Later, the returning officer issued show-cause notices to the duo.
In his response, Pala said it was an event of the church of Nongstoin regarding a hostel that is being built by the church from its funds.
He said the function was not official and no government grant was provided for the construction.
“During the function, there was no fanfare, no political speech and there was no appeal to voters. I attended the function in my personal capacity and expenses were from personal account,” Pala said.
According to the Congress leader, the question of use or ‘misuse’ of any official position for election campaign or laying foundation stone in any official capacity does not arise.
Pala urged the returning officer to drop the case against him. He also wanted a personal hearing if the matter comes up again.
