NONGSTOIN: The women’s wing of the Nongstoin Block Congress Committee called for a united fight against divisive groups in the state.
Addressing a gathering of 3,000-odd women party workers on Monday, AICC Mahila general secretary Bismita Gogoi said the BJP-led NDA government was using different tactics to convince the people with false promises.
“As party workers we have to be united to fight against those forces who are trying to break the community into pieces. Other parties like NPP and even regional parties are in the shadow of BJP trying to fool people by creating a communal force,” she said.
The Congress is the one that is concerned about minorities and religion and people in Meghalaya still have faith in the Congress, Gogoi said.
The Mahila president slammed the BJP over the programme ‘Mann ki Baat’ where false promises are made to get vote. “So I request the people of Nongstoin and the state not to waste their precious vote on false promises,” said Gogoi.
The turnout of women members impressed Gabriel Wahlang, the Congress candidate, who termed it as historical. He sounded confident of winning the seat saying on a lighter note, “Behind every successful man there is a woman.”
A big screen at the venue of the meeting showed BJP activities to prove the party’s “dictatorial” methods.
Asked about regional parties, Wahlang said they were short-lived. He accused to the other political parties of trying to commercialise the election as he alleged that many were attempting to bribe voters.
The meeting also appointed new office bearers of the Mahila Nongstoin where Lily Mary Nongkseh was elected as president, Selina Shangpliang as vice president and B Nongkseh as general secretary.
Nongstoin Cong ex-chief, candidate bury the hatchet
Former Nongstoin Block Congress Committee (NBCC) president Albinus Kharbani and the current president Gabriel Wahlang have agreed to bury the hatchet and work together for the Assembly election.
Wahlang is the party’s candidate from Nongstoin.
Shillong MP and MPCC working president Vincent H Pala mediated to end the conflict between the two leaders.
A meeting was organised on February 8 where NBCC members, including S. Marwein and JTS Thongni, and others were present.
NBCC reinstated Kharbani who was earlier suspended for anti-party activities in 2016.
