SHILLONG: With election campaigns being stepped up by political parties which have also witnessed political mudslinging, divisions were also seen in families pertaining to political allegiance.
In an incident that took place at Lapangap village under Nartiang constituency in West Jaintia Hills in which a hut was allegedly torched by Congress members on Tuesday, Congress members from Lapangap unit downplayed issue of political rivalry by pointing out that it was a family matter.
Addressing reporters on Friday, member of Congress unit from Lapangngap, Deimonmi Lyngdoh said, “It has nothing to do with elections. The hut was burnt down due to family matters.”
Deimonmi added that the owner of the house, Tilda Dkhar and her children are ardent supporters of NPP candidate from Nartiang, Sniawbhalang Dhar while her husband, Alias Lyngdoh, is a supporter of Congress.
Deimonmi claimed that difference in political allegiance was the bone of contention in the family.
He said that Dkhar, was in an inebriated state when the people rush to the place on the night of the incident.
“When we went to check on the house, we found that the materials in the house were kept aside. We found that she was drunk along with other accomplices,” Deimonmi said.
It may be mentioned that Dkhar alleged that Congress supporters had torched her house while she and her family was attending election campaigns at Saitsama and Mukoilum villages.
Deimonmi said that even the headman and VDP were not aware of the incident.
