NONGPOH: Top district-level leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Nongpoh have joined the Congress in support of its candidate Mayralborn Syiem.
BJP’s district mahila president Jenita Marbaniang, Nongpoh Mandal advisor Lion Nongtri, Nongpoh Mandal general secretary George Tangsang and Niangbarithem unit president Mission Namsaw and other members of the Nongpoh Mandal joined the Congress at a function on Saturday.
The BJP leaders said they unanimously decided to join the Congress because the BJP leadership did not allot ticket to a winnable candidate. BJP has fielded Marian Maring from the constituency.
The leaders also said the saffron party was yet to be accepted in Nongpoh and other parts of the state. “In a secular state like Meghalaya, the Congress is the only party that can bring overall changes and development with peace and harmony.”
The Congress also gained eight members of the United Democratic Party from Umling and Umskun and one NPP member, Justine Maring, who was the assistant secretary of the party’s Umskun unit.
Mayralborn and other Congress leaders from Nongpoh were present at the function.
“There is no doubt that the Congress party come back to power after the election and we have decided to work aggressively to ensure glorious victory for the party’s candidate from Nongpoh,” the leaders said.
