SHILLONG: A voter in North Shillong almost missed the chance to exercise her franchise because someone else had voted in an alleged mix-up.
When Rinku Paul reached Jail Road Boys’ School on Tuesday morning she was informed that she had already voted. “When I went with my EPIC to sign, they (poll officials) told me that my vote had been cast and I cannot do it again but I protested,” she told reporters. Later, she informed about the incident to BJP candidate JA Lyngdoh and other BJP leaders who rushed to the spot.
Lyngdoh said he spoke to the deputy commissioner and insisted that no person should be denied their right to vote. Accordingly, the DC directed the polling officers to allow the woman to cast her vote.
Chief Electoral Officer FR Kharkongor, however, said the matter has not been brought to his knowledge.
