SHILLONG: The hurdles in the construction of the Jowai-Ratacherra two-lane road are being steadily ironed out and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is trying its best to complete it within the scheduled date.
The upgradation work has made satisfactory progress and more than 90 km out of the 102 km of the road has been completed.
However, NHAI is yet to get land from the district administration of West Jaintia Hills for setting up project facilities and toll plaza and the delay in handing over the land has been taken up with the state government.
Besides, the land will be used for road construction near Sonapur and the areas adjacent to it and also for drainage work and carriage way.
The deadline to complete the project is May 2018.
The expansion work of the arterial NH-44 has been approved under Phase-III of the National Highway Development Programme and the road will be a boon not only for Meghalaya but also for other neighbouring states, including Assam and Mizoram.
The upgraded road will be a welcome change.
The project cost is Rs 630 crore.
