SHILLONG: As the arch rivals Congress and BJP-NPP secured 21  seats each in the state Assembly polls,  now all eyes are set on the United Democratic Party  (UDP) which is poised to play a major role in the formation of the new Government in the state.

The UDP with its six seats would play the major role but the party is yet to decide whether it will support the Congress or the BJP  and NPP to form the Government.

UDP leader, Bindo M Lanong said that the party will have a meeting most probably on Sunday to discuss the matter and the majority in the party will decide whether the party should go with Congress or the NPP

The UDP in the past was a part of the Congress led  MUA Government in Meghalaya  and it finally broke its alliance with the Congress before the  2013 Assembly polls.

However, soon after the BJP came into power at the Centre , the  UDP also became a part of the  North East Democratic Alliance, an initiative of the  Assam Minister, Himanta BIswa Sarma.

Meanwhile, reacting to a query about UDP’s performance in the polls, he   said, “ It is easier to predict an earthquake than to predict a human mind.”

When asked if the alliance between UDP and HSDP  has failed,   he said that  there was no problem with the alliance    since they got some seats in Mawkyrwat,   Mawthadraishan, Mairang and Sohiong because of   the alliance

“ But Shillong is a different case altogether,” he said.
