SHILLONG: Bara Bazar, or Iewduh, is considered as one of the filthiest and unhygienic places in the city but the Hima Mylliem is trying its best to bring about a change and set an example.
The Hima Mylliem has embarked on a series of makeover of the market, known as the “rice bowl of the people in Khasi and Jaintia Hills”.
The Acting Syiem of Hima Mylliem, Pa’iem Ricky Nelson Syiem, visited the tomato market on Wednesday and appealed to vendors to maintain cleanliness after the Hima Mylliem constructed cemented road in the area amounting to Rs 7 lakh. The area where tomatoes are bought and sold is filthy and muddy and it gets worse during rainy season posing a problem to both sellers and buyers.
Syiem told reporters that the Hima Mylliem is creating awareness among local sellers and traders on the need to maintain cleanliness. The office of the Hima Mylliem is also making efforts to beautify the area on its own expenses.
Syiem informed that the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) floated a tender for the beautification of the Iewduh.
The KHADC and the Hima Mylliem have assured that the entrances will be constructed at Motphran and at the tomato trade market in which Rs 51 lakh has been estimated for the construction earmarked under the special assistance scheme of 2015-16.
Again, it may be recalled that last year, the Hima Mylliem organised a meeting at Students’ Field on cleanliness awareness in which Wanshan Kharkrang, Environmental Engineer at Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB), informed traders about laws, regulations and punitive actions to ensure that cleanliness is maintained in the market.
