SHILLONG: Theilin Phanbuh, the president of Lympung ki Seng Kynthei, said more women should have participated in the recently concluded Assembly elections so that issues pertaining to women could have been highlighted in the Assembly.
Speaking at the International Women’s Day held on Thursday, Phanbuh said, “Three women won the Assembly seats. But we need more women to come out and take on the task of raising crucial issues, including rights of women in the Assembly.”
“Cooperation between men and women is a must to ensure progress and fulfil the aspirations of the people,” he said.
Phanbuh also raised the pending matter of the Women Reservation Bill and hoped that the NDA government passes the Bill at the earliest.
According to her, participation of women in electoral politics will bring about clean and transparent governance.
Meanwhile, International Women’s Day was celebrated by Manbha Foundation in collaboration with Youth Red Cross, St Mary’s College, in which a rally was taken out from the Basketball Court Iewrynghep, Laitumkhrah, to State Central Library.
Director of Manbha Foundation, Rica Lamar said laws regarding safety and security of women and children are not stringent and urged the NPP-led state government to look into the matter seriously.
A victim of the Pynthorumkhrah incident in which three girls were assaulted and who were tonsured in public, said, “We did not get justice. The people who assaulted us did not get punished.”
Among others who celebrated the day in the city were members of the Shillong Assamese Ladies Welfare Club.
