SHILLONG: Home Minister James Sangma on Thursday hoped that militancy could be eradicated with the help of people from all sections during the tenure of the new government.
“We want a peaceful Meghalaya and we hope to end the scourge of militancy during the tenure of the new government,” Sangma told reporters.
To a question, James said that GNLA is free to come over ground and give up arms and talks can be held only after their surrender.
He said though the chief minister is of the view that there is a need to have multi-pronged approach to deal with militancy, from the point of police, operations will be carried out against the militants.
“There are issues like addressing socio- economic causes of militancy, but our stand is to carry on with operations against criminal groups,” he said.
Peace text to be reviewed
James also said that the agreed text of settlement with ANVC-ANVC-B groups will be reviewed to reach a conclusion.
