SHILLONG: UDP president Donkupar Roy on Thursday rebutted claims that the party was opposed to Prestone Tynsong as the chief minister.
Reacting to a statement by former HSPDP chief Ardent Basaiawmoit, Roy said the question of opposition did not occur.
“We did not even discuss his (Tynsong’s) name. We discussed who should be the right person to become the chief minister and I was told that NPP has an agreement that if they get more seats from Khasi Hills, the chief minister will be from here and if they have more MLAs from Garo Hills, the chief minister will be from there,” Roy said.
Basaiawmoit had asked Roy to clarify his stand on objecting to Tynsong’s name.
According to Roy, his agreement with Conrad Sangma was that the parties should try  to have a stable government “which will be fair to all sections of people, including the MLAs both in the ruling and the Opposition”.
Basaiawmoit had criticised the UDP for proposing the name of Conrad for the post of chief minister and having an alliance with the BJP as HSPDP was averse to the idea of including the saffron party.
