City women missing
SHILLONG: Two women from the city went missing and search for them is on. Last Mary Shylla (25) was reported missing from her residence at Riat Laban, Kynjat Phutbol, since March 18. Another girl went missing from her residence at Pohkseh, since March 16.

Fire at MeECL colony
SHILLONG: All the huts at the MeECL residential colony, Umiam in Ri Bhoi, were gutted in a fire on Monday. The incident happened around 2.30 pm, when a fire broke out at the residential colony due to an explosion of an LPG cylinder, police said.

MLCU celebrates World Social Work Day
SHILLONG: The Department of Social Work of Martin Luther Christian University on Tuesday celebrated the World Social Work Day on its campus along with the rest of the world under the universal theme of ‘Promoting Community and Environmental Sustainability’. This is the second and final year of this theme of the Global Agenda for Social Work and Social Development. The students of the department performed a short role play on social awareness and also the importance of environmental sustainability. One of the faculty members of the department, Nandaris Marwein, gave a brief report on the major findings from the survey which was done during the community camp held from March 12 to17, in the village of Khlookynrin, West Jaintia Hills District. She informed the gathering that the majority working population of the community is daily wage labourers, farmers, coal mine workers. She added that many of the villagers were affected by different health issues like tuberculosis, chest problem, cancer and skin infections because of their work in the coal mines. The students also performed songs and dances from the different tribes of the North East during the programme.

Learning kits distributed to children in SWGH
AMPATI: The Teaching-Learning Materials (TLM) kits were distributed to the children with intellectual disabilities from Zikzak and Betasing C&RD Blocks at a programme organised by the District Unit of SSA, South West Garo Hills in the Multi-Facility Centre, Ampati on Tuesday. The TLM kits were supplied by the National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (Divyangjan) (NIEPID ) under the Union Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Secunderabad, for which identification and assessment of persons with intellectual disabilities (mentally retarded) was conducted in October, last year. This is the third of such programmes in the state and the first in the district. During the distribution programme, EAC & District Mission Coordinator, SSA, Ampati, D.A.Sangma gave away the TLM kits to the beneficiaries along with NIEPID Coordinator for Meghalaya, G. Srinivas. The Teaching-Learning Materials kits containing materials like flash cards for learning alphabets and GK, tailoring kit for girls, currency kit, assembling & dismantling set and others were given to children of pre-primary, primary and secondary stage, but the kits containing wristwatch, calculator, cell phone and reading materials were distributed only to those beneficiaries in the age group of 12 years and above.

Health Mela cum legal awareness held in Ranikor
Mawkyrwat: As part of the observance of World Tuberculosis Day, the office of the District Medical & Health Officer (DM&HO) on Tuesday organised a Health Mela at Ranikor Administrative Unit, South West Khasi Hills District.  The programme, which started with a slogan rally, was attended by Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo as chief guest in the presence of other officers from the District.  Speaking on the occasion, Laloo stressed on the importance of health and the needs for proper immunisation thereby, urging the people to avail the opportunities offered by this department through various health programmes. She also called upon the people to not to be misled by people or sources that prevents them from getting health related services and other services which is meant for development.  Meanwhile, M. Marbaniang, District Medical & Health Officer, briefly spoke on health related issues especially on issues pertaining to pregnant women, lactating mothers and children.
