SHILLONG: The state police still do not have any information about William A Sangma, the dreaded criminal who escaped from police custody on March 16 even as intelligence inputs have been shared with other neighbouring states about him.
A source in the Police Department told The Shillong Times on Sunday, “The search is on but no information about him has surfaced so far.”
Sangma, who formed a rebel outfit two years ago, was arrested by Assam police in 2017. He escaped while taking treatment at Tura Civil Hospital.
William was involved in a series of abductions along the Kherapara-Dalu road and on one occasion, shot an unarmed off-duty policeman who was heading home to Dalu. He later fled to Assam from where he orchestrated several kidnappings in North Garo Hills region of Resubelpara and Mendipathar.
With a ragtag group of criminals, Sangma formed the A’chik National Cooperative Army and even managed to procure a powerful automatic assault rifle.
After being on the run for a long time, he was caught by Goalpara district police and handed over to Meghalaya where he was serving jail term in the Tura district jail until he made the escape.
