SHILLONG: The cancer wing at Civil Hospital in the city has been hanging fire for over seven years now despite high prevalence of the disease in Meghalaya.
Though the Health Department and the Department of Atomic Energy signed an MoU 7-8 years ago, “some issues came up” delaying the project, sources said.
The sources added that construction of the building is nearing completion and some machines have also been installed but the wing needs more equipment.
The Health Department is hoping to make the cancer wing functional within a year.
The construction of the wing started in 2011 with a funding of Rs 26 crore from the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India.
In 2015, a team from the Department of Atomic Energy had pulled up the state government for the delay.
Sophisticated equipment worth Rs 15 crore will be used to provide better medical facilities to patients.
New Health and Family Welfare Minister AL Hek has already asserted that he would prioritise the completion of the cancer wing.
